Brian Froud was chosen as concept artist after Henson saw one of his paintings in the book Once upon a time. A prophecy was written that stated if a Gelfling healed the crystal, the world would be renewed and the UrSkek would be reunited. The word "Skeksis" was initially meant to be the plural, with "Skesis" being singular, though this was dropped early in the filming process.
Jim Henson stated, "My whole approach to this film is visual. If Jen succeeds, the world will be saved; but if Jen fails, the Skeksis will rule the land forever. In addition to the state-of-the-art puppets, special visual effects also played a crucial role in bringing the world of The Dark Crystal to life.
The original plot involved a malevolent race called the Reptus group, which took power in a coup against the peaceful Eunaze, led by Malcolm the Wise. Originally, Henson wanted the Skeksis to speak their own constructed languagewith the dialogue subtitled in English. When Jim Henson began work on The Dark Crystal inhe had no story, just a sense of the kind of fantasy world he wanted to create.
As a bestiary, however, it is bountiful- a prodigious and amusing parade of things that do much more than bump in the night.
The puppets were controlled through a variety of radio, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems. While the puppeteers who operated the main characters were drawn from the ranks of the Muppeteers, the Mystics and many of the other creatures were brought to life by a specially recruited group of mimes, actors, dancers, acrobats and clowns.
If you have all these alien-looking creatures, why should they be talking in English? Froud also incorporated geometric symbolism throughout the film in order to hint at the implied unity of the two races.
This was scrapped in favor of an orchestral score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra once Gary Kurtz became involved, as it was felt that an unusual score would alienate audiences. Whereas the Muppets are very simple bold shapes, what I designed was very complex and complicated.

We knew we would have to have some miniatures, some matte paintings, a lot of optical composite work and some blue screen work.
But he thought it opened up a whole different way of looking at reality, which I think was one of his goals in the making of The Dark Crystal. Henson intended to convey the idea that they were purged of all materialistic urges, yet were incapable of acting in the real world.
Miss Piggy would take one look at the place and order pink satin drapes. We decided to build the Dark Crystal Castle in two miniature sizes, one about 10th scale and one about 25th scale so that we could build a fairly large landscape with mountains and terrain and put the castle in the middle.
